The severe itchy rash might be a sight effect of getting the COVID-19 Moderna vaccine, warned doctors. Patients saw a big skin lesion at the injection site and it was about 10 centimeters in diameter.
In a trial of 30000 people 12, people who received the first dose of Moderna vaccine saw their arms turn swollen and itchy, 5 to 7 days after they getting vaccinated, as per the letter published in New England Journal of Medicine by doctors.
The letter said that five of the patients saw a big skin lesion at the injection site and it was about 10 centimeters in diameter. Two patients experienced the rash in other places like palm or elbow.
The rash appeared 5 or 8 days after getting the first dose, but these rashes were gone after 4-5 days, the report said.
These patients were encouraged to complete the vaccination course by getting the second dose.
Three patients who received a second dose of the vaccine also had to face some side effects. Some of them had skin issues. As per the doctors, these side effects are not severe or harmful.
The lead author Dr. Kimberly Blumenthal of Massachusetts General Hospital said in a statement that “whether you have experienced a rash at the site of injection right after the vaccination or this delayed skin reaction, none of these conditions should prevent you from receiving the second dose of the vaccine”.
“Our immediate aim is to make physicians and other care providers aware of this possible delayed reaction, so they are not alarmed, but in fact informed pretty well and equipped to advise their patients accordingly”.
